Materials needed for this project:

  • Pumpkin (s) – real or artificial, any size!
  • Carving knife to cut out top, eyes and nose
  • Baking soda
  • Vinegar
  • Optional: Dish soap
  • Food coloring
  • Plate or tray to catch the “lava”

Before you start…

You can use real pumpkins and cut open the top and scoop out the inside. If you prefer to skip taking out all the seeds and extra bits and use an artificial fake pumpkin.

Step 1.

Carefully use your knife to cut out a silly, spooky, or funny face. You can use any size pumpkin, just remember the bigger the pumpkin the more material you will need to get the huge WOW effect. (Make sure this is done by an adult)

Step 2.

Now fill the inside of the pumpkin about halfway with baking soda.

Step 3.

Add a few drops of dish soap to the baking soda and food coloring if you’d like.

Step 4.

Place the mini pumpkin on a tray or plate to catch the lava mess. Pour vinegar into  the mini pumpkin.

Finally…

Watch The eruption happen! This is so cool and dramatic your children are going to flip!
